Kankakee County Amateur Radio Emergency Service

About Us

Amateur Radio has been a time honored hobby for over 100 years. Ham Radio got its roots in public service, providing communication support for military and civil defense authorities. Technology and equipment has changed over the years, but the mission of public service remains unchanged.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service is a volunteer organization with oversight by the Federal Communication Commission and The American Radio Relay League. It is a recognized partner by The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In Kankakee County, The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) works closely with the National Weather Service and the Emergency Services & Disaster Agency to provide advanced warning of severe weather. This arraignment provides real-time communication between the meteorologists who monitor the storm data and the spotters who can report on conditions on the ground.

We provide communication support to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, medical facilities and other emergency service organizations in the time of need.

"ARES" and "Amateur Radio Emergency Service" are registered servicemarks of the American Radio Relay League, Inc and are used by permission
